Rut Predictions

by  D&DH Staff

In the October 2008 issue of Deer & Deer Hunting, Deer Behavior Contributing Editor Charles Alsheimer laid out rut predictions for fall 2008. As whitetails ramp up rutting activity during the next few weeks, now is prime-time to be in the woods. Here’s an excerpt to help you plan during coming weeks.

“If you can only hunt one week each fall, you’ll be happy to know the rut has a sweet spot — a magic week to 10 days — when deer activity is greatest. All things being equal, the rut’s sweet spot this year will occur from two to 10 days after the rutting moon. This is the period when bucks will be going bonkers, providing great hunting opportunities.

“In the North this will be during the Nov. 15 to 24 timeframe. In the South, it will be the two to 10 days that follow the rutting moon for your particular area.”

Welcome to the site

The season we wait all year for is well upon us. Bow season has given way to muzzleloader here in the northwest and soon rifle will be in. I know many of you in the piedmont and coast have been afield with rifles for awhile, but we move a little slow up here in the mountains. Nevertheless we will be toting our rifles into the woods with us on saturday. However the more dedicated bowhunters and muzzleloaders will probably still be practicing their craft till the season end. I will definetly be taking my trusty 30-06 out. I still plan on zinging some sharp sticks at unsuspecting does here and there. Especially with the new bonus doe tags in the max season zones where i hunt like ashe and alleghany. I cant argue with a little more meat in the freezer! We are hoping you enjoy the new site. We will strive to get you the most up to date hunting news as well as the latest and greatest tactics, strategies and technology. We want the readers of this site to be the best outdoorsman they can be. Keep your eyes peeled for some exciting hunt videos and informative articles from the crew. We have some very talented individuals on board who have hunted all over the country. Stay tuned and good luck out there. May meat fill your freezers and heavy horns adorn your walls this season.

Can you guess the score?

So you think you know trophies? Here’s how to find out. Click through the following 10 photos of Boone & Crockett record book bucks and see if you can guess which of the four net scores listed below each photo is correct.

If you need a refresher on how bucks are scored, check out the story below. It’s a reprint of a November ‘05 Sportsman’s Notebook guide to gross scoring your buck. Note that net score, the only score entered into the B&C books, includes deductions for asymmetry, while the gross score (below) does not. Good luck!
